Is it time to start using VR?

Technological advances never fail to amaze me. But virtual reality (VR) – and its ability to transform customer engagement – is a whole new level.

There was much excitement in the office this week when a trade magazine we often receive arrived showcasing augmented reality (AR). By simply scanning a code on the magazine, with a smart device, a video news round-up of the magazine contents played.

It made a significant impact and certainly improved our interest and engagement with the magazine. Was this because of the novelty factor or was it because it crossed the digital/traditional media divide?

But, it got me thinking about how other businesses can apply VR and AR software to their marketing.

VR will inevitably become more accessible as the technology becomes easier to use and create – as does all technology. So it isn’t as ‘out of reach’ as some businesses might think.

There are lots of ways to get creative with this technology. It is a blank canvas that you can make into anything you need it to be.

So, here are a few ideas for how you can add VR to your marketing campaign…

DIY headsets

VR headsets make the experience much more immersive by shutting out anything that isn’t the screen. Understandably however, many people don’t want to purchase a proper VR headset that they would rarely use. But, that doesn’t mean they can’t share the experience.

McDonald’s found a great way to solve that problem by modifying its happy meal box so that it can be turned into a makeshift headset when you insert your smartphone.

This makes your VR accessible to more consumers so that you are able to reach more of your audience. It is worth remembering an idea like this if you are going to be developing your own VR experience for a vast audience. VR for all!

360 videos

Videos are an engaging form of content, but you can make them even more so if you film in 360. This is one of the easiest ways that you can play with VR content for your business.

Virtual tours of places are particularly impactful using 360 degree filming because the user can move the image as if the were turning to look around putting them in control of what they see.

Why not film a 360 tour of your shop? Take your audience to an exhibition or event and show them around? If there is a project that your team are working on, then show it off? These are just a few of the ways you can experiment with a 360 camera.

VR has been used in gaming for a while now, so why not use that to your advantage?

To really get your audience engaged, creating a VR game for your brand could be an exciting way to reward existing customers and spark interest in potential customers. Gaming for coupons and vouchers could be a good way to get started.

Show your audience a good time and get their competitive juices flowing.

Take it on the road

To intensify the VR experience, and make it even more memorable, you could turn it into a 4D experience.

If you have ever been to a 4D cinema, you’ll know that the 4D element of the viewing is when your surroundings match the goings on in the movie; where you can feel any wind, splashes of water, and rumbling underfoot.

Vamp up the VR experience for your customers by creating a mobile 4D unit that you can take to places like shopping centres and tourist destinations where you are most likely to interact with your customers.

You can create an experience your customers won’t forget that they can find on their doorstep.

Consumers are more aware of what VR is today and most people are willing to embrace new technology and give things a try if they feel they are going to get enjoyment out of it.

Using VR is another way you can create an engaging experience for consumers in an interactive way.

Like anything new in marketing, this technology lends itself to some businesses more than others. But if you have a VR idea for your business that you believe could materialise into something useful and engaging, it could be a huge asset to help you to attract more customers and increase loyalty with your existing ones.

And what will be the next trend in technology? Whatever it is, we are ready for it.
